Periodontitis

As gum disease advances, it destroy more and more gum tissue until the very bone that hold teeth starts to recede and vanish. Teeth are no longer securely held in place and will start to move and eventually fall out. This is the final stage of advanced gum disease, or periodontitis. Your dentist will usually measure the depth of periodontal pockets, spaces between the teeth and the gums that bacteria hide in. These perio pockets can be up to 9mm and more in depth for severe cases of periodontitis. Scaling and root planning is a typical treatment by your dentist, but it may not be enough; some periodontitis cases require a surgical treatment, in which gums are cut, folded down, and the tooth root surface as well as the gums are scraped until free of deposits. The dentist will then sew up the gums and hope for the best.
